Cole James – Cole James Ceramics

As humans we perceive natural phenomena as taking ages, yet in the eyes of the earth the growth, erosion, decay and destruction it performs on itself is just the blink of an eye.

Tell us a little about yourself. What is Cole James Ceramics all about?

Well, Cole James is simply my name! Cole James ceramics is ceramic art made by me.

Where do you draw inspiration from for your work?

My inspiration is drawn from mother earth. The eons it takes to move mountains. Rivers slicing through plains. Wind carving boulders. As humans we perceive natural phenomena as taking ages, yet in the eyes of the earth the growth, erosion, decay and destruction it performs on itself is just the blink of an eye. These processes are violent, yet creep for ages. Theres an order to the chaos, and I like to find the balance.

How does your love for plants influence your work?

I started working with ceramics to fulfill a need for myself, my growing collection of cactus and house plants. My aim is to not just to create aesthetically corresponding wares (weather it represent a cactuses natural environment, or fitting a Pothos in your home) but ensuring the health of the plant is secured through thoughtful design.

What are some of your current favorite plants in your collection?

My love is for cactus. Currently obsessed with Pachypodium, Astrophytum, and plants from thr African island of Socotra.

What's in the near future for your and your business?

I’m planning within a year to set up a private home studio out in Joshua Tree. Its quite beautiful there.
